I very much agree that the marketplaces that support the popularity of the iThisNThat fad need to have an outlet in the open source arena. I VERY much want a tablet computer, but after my 1.5 year experience with the iPhone, I realized very quickly that a larger version of the iPhone wasn't what I wanted, for a number of good reasons.

I moved to droid from iphone a few months back and haven't been happier. However, I MUST admit that given the difference in the sdk platforms and a perception (at this point on my part,) that there are more free apps on the droid, I have found myself much LESS likely to put my CC in on the platform to purchase an app. I feel like mobile apps are a temporary fix for slower mobile hardware and that "realization" has significantly dampened my appetite for paid-for apps on mobile devices. I want the REAL deal, (fully functional OS and fully functional software (paid license or otherwise,) ) on my kick-ass tablet device that will allow me to do anything I would normally do on a conventional device... Moreover, I'm very willing to wait (before shelling out 500 smackers,) until the device and the OS are ready to accomplish this.

To the point of this article, I am otherwise VERY willing to pay for software and even more willing to pay for Content (music, books, etc...) that will deliver the experience I desire. To look at my Steam account, would be the proof to that pudding.... In short, what we're purchasing is an experience (software or digital content,) and if that experience isn't quality, ultimately, I'm not going to spend money on it. If Linux or FreeBSD are capable of delivering those experiences, I'll definitely sign the bottom line and feed the machine my CC... If not though (and lets be honest, there are significant issues with linux support of popular mainstream software in many many cases,) I'll be waiting until Apple offers up OSX on a tablet before I buy in.
