XBMC 13 Alpha 7 released with major new features

by Rob Zwetsloot

Although the latest XBMC 13 release is an alpha version, it has a couple of important features that will make its way into the next version, such as 3D support

XBMC has been making leaps and bounds with the last couple of versions, adding 10-bit codecs and Raspberry Pi support among others. The dev team are not slowing down or taking a cycle off, with XBMC 13 already receiving some major new features with the release of the seventh alpha.

Firstly, after many years, Android hardware decoding has been finally introduced into XBMC. For now it’s not total coverage though – it requires Android 4.0 or more, and not all chipsets can use it. Apparently, it works fine on most major/popular Android tablets, such as the Nexus 7 and 10.

Although 3D has always been a contentious issue with cinema goers, there are those that like it, and some films that try and showcase it. Support for a number of 3D formats have been added now, including SBS, TAB, anaglyph (red/blue) and interlaced. XBMC still won’t properly support 3D Blu-rays though. There’s now a 3D button on the interface, allowing you to force 3D if XBMC hasn’t detected it, and more importantly it allows you to turn it off on a 3D video.

The new 3D button has a number of functions

This comes along with new interfaces updates, dropping support for Windows XP (which was apparently holding it back) and general bug fixes. You can check out the Alpha if you’re brave enough by grabbing it from the XBMC website.

There’s no 3D button in Confluence in Alpha 7 for Windows unless you open the video settings with the video playing and enable it. This is an awesome media platform! I think I’m going to have to start filming home movies in 3D now!
