Ubuntu for Android Previewed

by Rob Zwetsloot

Developed for Motorola Atrix 2, includes Ubuntu TV and advanced integration with Android

Earlier today, Linux User & Developer sat down with Richard Collins from Canonical to see the latest Ubuntu product – Ubuntu for Android. Running on the upcoming Motorola Atrix 2 for prototyping, we got to see the Ubuntu Desktop and Ubuntu TV in action.

The new environment is only available when docked, however it can determine if it’s connecting to a TV or to a monitor and keyboard. This means it will automatically launch into Ubuntu TV if you’re plugging it into the family TV to show off your videos.

One of the more interesting features is its integration with Android. Canonical have publicized how stored data and Android apps can be accessed from the Ubuntu Desktop environment, such as making phone calls, accessing music, and reading Gmail. The clever part though is that the Ubuntu programs will know what you were doing before it docked: the web browser will launch into the same page you were viewing, and audio players like Rhythm Box will continue playing your music.

You can read our definitive breakdown of Ubuntu for Android, and interview with developer Richard Collins, in an upcoming issue of Linux User & Developer.
