PureOS 5 is here – Debian Wheezy for the masses

by Rob Zwetsloot

PureOS 5 has just been released, coming with the latest Debian Testing packages, Linux Kernel 3.3.6, and more.

The developers behind PureOS have announced the immediate availability of PureOS 5.0, the latest in their line of Debian Testing based distributions. The OS is made to show off the latest developments in Debian, and while it’s presented as a Live CD OS, you can just as easily install it to your system.

The distro comes with the usual suspects by default – LibreOffice 3.5, Transmission, VLC 2.0, Banshee, GIMP 2.8, etc. Instead of Firefox and Thunderbird though, PureOS comes bundled with Iceweasel and Icedove, both based on the two applications anyway. You also get Linux Kernel 3.3.6, and the very latest GNOME Shell 3.4.2.

You can grab PureOS 5.0 from the website. Not keen on GNOME? Then you may have to wait to get a KDE version.

I am posting this from the PureOS 5.0 live cd. I have yet to find anything like an installation menu, icon, or whatever. I logged in as root, but there is no installation instructions etc. Maybe I am blind.

Okay, I found the installation menu. It was at the bottom under other. I was looking under system based upon internet search information about 4.0. Now I cannot boot because of some firmware bug involving k8-powernow. More research. But I wouldn’t be happy if everything went smooth as silk.
