NOOBS 1.3, new Rasbian and NOOBS Lite comes to Raspberry Pi

by Rob Zwetsloot

The New Out of Box Software (NOOBS) for Raspberry Pi has been updated, now with an alternative lightweight versions that downloads the latest images, including the latest release of Raspbian

The premier Raspberry Pi distro, Raspbian, has been a favourite of ours in the office due to its ease of use and extreme flexibility thanks to its Debian base and a smart configuration menu that helps us get it working as we want in no time at all. A brand new version of Rasbpian has hit, bringing with it a few updates.

First up, Scratch, MITs programming language and IDE for kids and novices, has received performance improvements. Sonic Pi is now installed by default, allowing you to learn programming while creating music at the same time. The Oracle JDK has also been added by default to the image, along with other minor updates and bug fixes.

Raspbian isn’t the only thing that’s been updated – the easy-to-use installation software called NOOBS is now at version 1.3. It now includes the ability to multi-boot distros from one SD card, different flavours of Raspbian, and you can install direct from the online repositories to get the most up to date version.
