Mozilla’s Boot to Gecko phone partners with Telefónica, T-Mobile

Mozilla also showing off it’s new open web based mobile platform at MWC

Mozilla revealed today that they are working with Telefónica to create devices based on their new Boot to Gecko project. The project aims to build phones based on a HTML5 stack, with full access to Mozilla’s new Web APIs designed for mobile use.

Other partners in the project include Qualcomm, the mobile chip manufacturer, Deutsche Telekom, parent company of T-Mobile, and Adobe. While the projected hardware will be low power compared to modern high-end smartphones, Boot to Gecko will be able to run much better on it than Android or iOS according to Mozilla.

Telefónica itself is the parent company of UK network operator 02, and the third largest telecommunications company in the world.

Mobile World Congress is running this week in Barcelona, where new Android phones, Ubuntu for Android, and Boot to Gecko are all on show.
