MakerBot industries back to using open source

Posted by Rob Zwetsloot

The next generation of MakerBot’s Replicator’s will be powered by Linux, with the recently announced machines running on ARM

3D printing has quickly become a huge technological innovation, and one of the major drivers for this has been the guys from MakerBot. Their Replicator line has broken boundaries in consumer and business level 3D printing; while originally built on open source software, the last Replicator’s ran on their proprietary offering.

The new line of MakerBot’s have returned to a more open source offering though, with the fifth generation Replicator running on a modified version of Texas Instrument’s Angstrom Linux. The Replicator’s are powered by TI ARM9 chips, making this an excellent solution for running the software.

The new Replicator’s are out now, and you can see more on the MakerBot website.
