Go Read – An Open Source Google Reader project

by Rob Zwetsloot

An open source web reader created to copy Google Reader’s look and feel, go read is an interesting project

Just like that, Google Reader is no more. Google pulled the plug on their beloved feed reader this morning after announcing its demise earlier in the year. The internet has been abuzz with alternatives, from already popular services such as Feedly, to new services taking advantage of the spotlight such as Digg Reader. Go Read though is not only a copy of Google Reader, but it’s also open source.

Go Read is currently under development, so it’s a little patchy, however it’s very close to Google Reader. The option to import from Google Reader obviously doesn’t work any more, but there is an option to import via OPML. We’ve gotten reports that the OPML import doesn’t always work at the moment though.

It’s definitely worth checking out – both the site itself, and the source on GitHub. Developer Matt Jibson plans on adding the Reader API in the future for apps that supported it as well.
