Firefox 22 comes with 3D game support

by Rob Zwetsloot

The latest update to the open source Firefox browser also now supports in-browser video calls without installing extra plugins

It’s that time again, as Firefox for Desktop and Firefox for Android are updated, although this time the biggest updates are coming to the desktop version of the browser. Mozilla have added a couple of brand new features into Firefox that let it handle 3D games better, and cut down on the need for external plugins with in-browser video calling.

The 3D games functionality uses the Emscripten cross-compiler to bring high-performance, native applications to Firefox. This has been demonstrated with Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 3, and allows developers to create great looking games in JavaScript, Emscripten and WebGL.

Firefox 22 also includes WebRTC which allows for video/voice calling and file sharing without any extra plugins. It apparently requires only a couple of extra lines to work with all apps that could make use of it.

Read more about the update on the Mozilla blog, and update your browser now.
