Linux on Advent 4213 Netbook

Postby Roly on Fri Oct 30, 2009 12:21 am

I'm considering installing Linux on my Advent 4213 Netbook and was wondering what Linux Distro would run best on this Netbook as I would like to use a Distro that will work with the built in Huawei Mobile Connect 3G Modem, built in Toshiba Bluetooth adapter, built in realtek HD Audio card, built in Realtek WIFI Card, Realtek, Realtek PCIe FE Eathernet controller, Intel Mobile 945 Graphics card and built in Realtek memory card reader. The Netbook is running on an Intel Atom N270 Processor running @ 1.60GHZ and has 1024MB of DDR2 RAM and has a 160GB Toshiba SATA Harddisk?

I would suggest trying EasyPeasy which is based on Ubuntu, it aims to be compatible with all netbooks.
I don't know that it will work with your hardware. My laptop contains a load of RealTek devices and I have a Huawei based mobile broadband device all of which work with Ubuntu so you should have a half decent chance that things will work.
As with other Ubuntu based distros you can try it out without installing onto your computer, there are instructions on the easypeasy web site for putting the distro onto a 2GB (minimum) USB stick and booting your netbook from the USB to try it out. If you like it you can then install from the USB stick.
Good Luck

Thanxs, will have to dig out my usb Harddisk and DVD Drive and install it onto that and see if it works then, might even keep it on that so that I've got a choice of Easy Peasy and Win XP depending on what I need to do.

I installed Fedora 10 rather quickly on my Netbook. The only thing that could have been considered a hick-up was there was no compatible WI-FI driver in the install  . My eth0 worked just fine though. I believe RedHat or Fedora would be about equal here, although I have heard grumblings about Fedora 11. I had to install the WI-FI driver after the fact. First I had installed OpenSuse 11.1, and actually that install went relatively well, except the ethernet driver didn't work, nor did the wireless. One point, you should make an image of your laptop as it is before you install another operating system over what you have, or consider virtualizing! If you do install to a USB drive, some distros have options to move the install over to you HDD. The catch to installing off a flash drive is that you may have to go and install security after the fact, but at least you can see that you have a functional laptop before you repartition.
